After getting ahead 12-0, Crushers received a number of penalties within kicking range but instead decided to run the ball.

But the Vikings finished strongly with two second half tries and despite missing with both conversion attempts, it was ironic Grant Popplewell managed to win the match by the barest margin with a penalty.

Meanwhile, Coffs Breakers opened their 2009 campaign by receiving a forfeit from Port Pirates B.

The match was originally scheduled for Park Beach Plaza Rugby Park but an early morning downpour forced the visiting team to consider the possibility of being stranded up north, forcing them to reluctantly cancel to a date to be announced.
