With most of the edges of the field a total bog, Breakers made a tentative start, before eventually cutting loose once theyd identified the dry patches in the middle.

Speaking to the Coffs Coast Advocate for the first time in his new role of co-coach, giant prop Nick Joyce was ecstatic with the outcome.

The boys played some hard rugby and just kept it tight in the ruck and maul, he said.

As an early game in the season it was always going to be a bit ugly and messy but I was surprised how well they got through the conditions and make no mistake, that was a good win.

Nearing half time the side displayed their true potential to entertain, when Joyce coming on as a replacement after arriving late at the ground steamed on to a glorious pass from co-coach Paul Butcher after a bustling run from the number eight had opened the Goannas up in centerfield.

Looking for support, Joyce spied Leith Vaughan over his left shoulder and once the ball was delivered, it was a case of shut the gate.

Did it look good? Joyce chuckled.

Not bad for early season when weve struggled for training and didnt have as many trials as normal.

Joyce was mystified like many on the sidelines who expected more from Bowraville.

The Goannas gave an impression they lacked enough confidence to try something different, whereas on the few occasion they put the ball through hands, they had the home side under awful pressure.

They hurt us when they sent it wide and Im pleased they didnt do it more often, Joyce added.

After the euphoria of collecting an early victory, Coffs Rugby Club was left deflated by the end of the day when Port Pirates delivered a forfeit to Coffs Rugby Crushers, forcing the team to put on an impromptu muck around game to get some fitness into their legs.

Its the second time in two weeks the Abigroup Mid North Coast premiers have failed to send a first grade team north.

COFFS RUGBY BREAKERS 50 (Kris Kent 2, Matt Kent 2, Tim Metcher, Paul Butcher, Leith Vaughan, Dylan Hurley tries; Ben Wallace 4, Kris Kent conversions) def BOWRAVILLE GOANNAS 7 (Jesse McEwen try; Matt Tyerman conversion).
